About

Thanks for visiting us!
We're stoked that you want to know more about our salty product.
We've created the best formulation and sourced the most premium ingredients we can, to bring you the salty boost you need for your body.

Boutique.
Little. Teeny. Tiny. One of a kind.
There's no big flash factory (unless you count the tiny home sized cabin we've worked our way up to). There's just one of me, with the help of my husband and sister. Boutique is the fancy word for saying I order the ingredients, clean, mix the salt, clean again, package it up, label it, fulfil orders, do the accounts, answer the emails, figure out promo, design the packaging, write this carry on on the website, it's cute, I know.
We worked our butts off from literally nothing, and we're proudly here to give you the finest!

Handcrafted.
The perfectionism is strong!
MNRL. has been a great place to channel some OCD, control freakiness. Every little detail is watched closely to bring you the best product we can. Everything has a reason behind it, and the salt couldn't be in more vigilant hands, so you know what you're getting has had a meticulous path to your home.
There's no doubt been learning curves, we are of course very human here at MNRL., but we are decisive, quick learners, always trying to be our best!

Premium.
The flavour game is strong!
The biggest, and most awesome, feedback we get is people loving the quality of our flavours. To be honest, people are almost surprised! What have your poor tastebuds been subject to?! Don't settle for less than this!
But I'm not surprised, we pay the bigger bucks to get the best! And it's not just our flavouring that is premium, every ingredient is specifically picked for quality. We're not here to chuck cheap and nasty stuff in a package, this was all a crafted mix to meet our own high standards, and share with you nothing less! See below for info on key ingredients.
NZ Proud
Where possible, everything is an NZ product, but if it's not, it's through an NZ supplier, that was a must!

Our Ingredients
-
1000mg Sodium Chloride
From Lake Grassmere NZ, no additives, no impurities, simply pure perfection!
It's natural sea salt, but better!
We only use Pharmaceutical grade Sodium Chloride to bring you the best. I'm talking the quality of IV line hydration, kidney dialysis, cleansing solutions, dietary and infant formulations. It's not your average salt, it is the crème de la crème, fine dining of salt.
It's the star piece so it had to be bloody good, and it is!
-
250mg Potassium Chloride
There are a lot of options for Potassium Chloride out there, but the guarantee of quality and a clear promise of cleanliness wasn't necessarily as easy to find.
But we dug deep and found a supplier than could tick all the boxes. High quality, clean, allergen free, comprehensive testing, and a wide range of third party certifications. We found it and didn't settle for less!
-
65mg Magnesium Oxide
We're not afraid of honesty here at MNRL. (I mean it's our branding isn't it!). Magnesium under the NZ/Aus Food Laws is tear your hair out worthy.
We, of course, would much prefer to use Malate or Glycinate, but it's not on the approved list of what we can use (dumb, I know!).
So tied up in legislation, we had to make a decision. We avoided Citrates as it can be tear your guts up material for a lot of people. We wanted gentle, high quality, and clean. The same supplier as our Potassium nails the bill
Natural flavours, citric acid, and stevia are all sourced through NZ suppliers and are of the highest quality. The taste of our flavoured MNRL. products are a nod to the calibre of the ingredients we use to bring you the best!
May as well make your sodium intake fun right?

The Nerdy Bit
Hydration isn't just about water, it's about saltiness too.
Ok, I'm just going to be straight up, this section could be so so long if I just went hundies on everything about hydration and electrolytes. So I'm going to try keep this brief, but if you want to read more, you can find more on our blog articles. The following 2 being key:
We're both trained Physios with post graduate study in Sports and Exercise Science, and Pain and Pain Management. We haven't come into understanding electrolytes and hydration from a basic "electrolytes are for when you do hard exercise" perspective, we've come from understanding the needs of EVERY SINGLE PERSON'S nervous system. From a viewpoint of general wellness - nutritional health, physical health, nervous system health.
There's no doubt sodium supplementation is helpful when you exercise, but we don't stay that shallow with our understanding. We're here to do our best to help pass the information on as to why this demonised part of nutrition is actually what can help every single person thrive.
We're all big ol' bags of salty water.
I feel like the message that humans are mainly made up of water is well known, but no one's really thinking about what is holding that all together and what the heck it is doing.
Water balance is all about the movement of ions and nutrients through our body. I feel like a good way to think about it is they have to swim through something to get between places. But if we have that space too watery, it's a big tiring swim to get anywhere, making our body tired and inefficient, and different areas fighting over the lack of access to ions and nutrients.
But if we flood ourselves with the ions and nutrients we need, no area misses out, efficiency is high as there is an abundance of access, and we feel dramatically better and rely less on stimulants such as caffeine to mask the true drag we are feeling.
So Why So Much Sodium?

All the cells in our bodies have walls with these funky little tunnels in them to move ions in and out (i.e. electrolytes).
A very important channel, that is abundant in excitable cells of neurons and muscles, are sodium-gated channels.
Sodium exchange over the cell wall creates a change in electrical charge, allowing a signal to be passed, and the subsequent action in the body to follow.
So do I even need to go on as to why you need an abundance of sodium in your body?
Quick exchange of sodium is reflected in the efficiency in our body. Which you can see why electrolytes role in exercise is well understood, and why most people associate it as a 'fit person thing'.
But did I just say those channels are just in muscles? No I did not.
They are throughout your body, bloody everywhere in your nervous system, they run this show, to the keep you alive, every thought, every movement, every heartbeat, and multiple signals per thing, do I even need to keep lecturing?
So what happens if we don't have enough sodium? Lethargy, slow thinking, brain fog, trouble concentrating, dizziness, inefficient movement, poor performance, muscle cramps, muscle pain, hormonal problems, peeing heaps to try increase the salt concentration.
Starting to sound like a big chunk of the population right? You can see how 2 frustrated physios got here.
What does a well sodium-ed person look like then?
Energy, stability, efficient body use, health throughout from all systems being nourished maximally, giving up or decreasing stimulants/reliant substances such as caffeine, refined sugars, unhealthy foods, alcohol or nicotine, sleeping better, decreased pain, managing stress better.
It's pretty good ya'll.
What are Potassium and Magnesium up to then?
The primary purpose of our product is to supplement Sodium levels.
However, Sodium needs buddies to help keep a nice balance in your body.
Sodium and potassium work together in a pump on our cells' walls to get the sodium back out by pumping the potassium in. 2 Potassiums go in, 3 sodiums come out. This gets the electrical state back in order to make another nerve impulse/muscle contraction through the sodium channels as described earlier.
Magnesium plays a key role in regulating both types pumps we've talked about, and regulating sodium and potassium transport in cells.
Potassium and Magnesium levels are typically better served through people's diets, but as Sodium has been labelled 'the bad guy' for so long, it's not in as much of our foods anymore, hence why it has such a bigger focus in our product.
But cavemen didn't have electrolytes?
A spiel that often comes out of my mouth, I actually wish we didn't live in a world where we needed supplements. But the quality of our food, how natural it is, and how natural we live, is not in line for what we are designed for.
But it is the way it is, and it's too big for me to change.
Please do make changes in your life and food habits to live more naturally and decrease the stress on your system.
But you are likely already tied up in this demanding world with your nervous system that is bigger and more developed than a caveman's.
You have less time for rest, and process so so much more, those nerve impulses can't be made out of nothing.
Oh, and you're probably not drinking blood. Doesn't seem overly common.
But yeah, cavemen did have electrolytes, the natural kind, they just weren't in neat little packages delivered to your door.
So what do you say? MNRL. or blood?
I could go on and on, there's so much to say, please go check out our blog if you want to know more. Otherwise let's focus on how to use our product.

Using MNRL.
MNRL. started off as a bit more admin than your average hydration product, but we're flavoured now, so it's pretty simple really!
We figured so many people were like us, and made up their bottle in their kitchen and were just needlessly throwing out individual sachets. However, we know convenience is key sometimes so we have both options for ya.
So how much should I measure out? (for jars)
3 rounded scoops = 1 dose (Flavoured MNRL. Formulas)
2 flat scoops = 1 dose (Unflavoured MNRL. Formula)
A flat scoop is, well, flat.
Rounded - well it's not heaped, but it's not flat - slightly generous you may say.
And how much water you say?
Well to be honest, that's up to you to find your taste.
Our packaging says 1.5L of water, but you find your fit.
Just as if you find our flavours too strong you have the option to mix some unflavoured in (e.g. 1 flat scoop unflavoured, 2 flat scoops flavoured) to still achieve a full dose
And what, how, who, where and when?
The trickiest question to answer is that of how often should I be taking this.
That is something for you to figure out, listening to your body while also weighing up your own constraints such as budget etc.
The simple thing is your body knows. Tune in and you'll be able to figure it out. There's nothing addictive in MNRL. so your cravings to have it will likely reflect what your body is searching for.
And you'll know when you've had too much as things might get a bit more loose at the other end as excess sodium in your bowel will draw more water into your poo.
We think that pretty much everyone could do with at least one dose a day. Like we said, it isn't a 'fitspo' thing, it's a fuel the nervous system thing.
After that, try upping it if you what, see how you feel, you'll know if it was worth it.
A wee list of things that drain sodium

Frequently Asked Questions
Discount code not working
There are a few reasons a discount code may not be working
First of course check your spelling
Make sure it is entered in CAPS
Discount codes cannot combine (our host's Shopify's setting), so only the code that gets you the best discount will apply to your order (a small message usually pops up when this happens) - so nope, you can't get more off your value stack sorry
Keep running into issues? Shoot me a message and we'll see if we can figure it out - hello@mnrl.co.nz
When will I get my order?
Our shipping policy is linked in the footer of our website. We usually process orders at night time Sunday to Thursday to work around our normal work and parenting life, so typically if you have ordered before around 7.30pm it will be processed and packed that night, and then MOST of the time the courier will pick up the next day.
Once we have done our bit we can't control when the courier will have time to pick up, or timing of their delivery, things obviously fluctuate with their workload. Timeframe is typically 1-3 working days (NZ), a little more if you're a south island address, rural address, or things get held up in high load times.
1-2 weeks for Australia.
Remember weekends and public holidays don't count as working days for courier companies, so things may not move in this time and does not count toward your wait time.
If you've experienced a timeframe longer than you'd expect send me a message and I can send an enquiry if I cannot see the reason for the delay myself.
Any other delays such as if we are away at any point will be in the announcement bars at the top of the website. Should it be for a long break (e.g. a weeks holiday) you will receive an alert before you order that you'll need to agree to to place your order
Do you do refill packs anymore?
We discontinued our refill bags due to ongoing issues with clumping, particularly in the MNRL. formula containing acid. We believe they weren't quite airtight enough making the reaction that seems to be happening between our magnesium oxide and the citric acid more dramatic, where this stays reasonably stable in a jar and clumps easily broken up by shaking the jar as recommended.
Also if people were using their bag as their main container for their MNRL. (not refilling a container) moisture was easily introduced. Or things weren't moisture tight enough when shipped in rainy weather.
We are looking into other options but to be honest isn't a huge huge priority in our time as glass can be endlessly recycled, so we feel it is still a planet friendly option. PLEASE recycle or reuse.
